EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
