Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
