Around fifty cars have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.

Police say they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.

The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.

Officers then found many other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials report early analysis indicate the fluid was most likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no indication as to its source; officials are not yet aware of any injuries in association with the event," they stated.

City officials announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.

A senior political figure stated the attack left him speechless and needed to be addressed promptly.

"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he stated on social media, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a gunman targeting individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
